Fishing at Strand.
Hi Alex, Many thanks for the reply. I only fish with rod's and reel's. I may sometimes use a hand line for catching live bait on a yazuri. I have only fished once at night and did not catch anything. All my fishing is done during the day. I fish mostly at Strand from 500 metres out because it is a reserve meaning no boats etc only shore angling. It is difficult to guage 500 metres out so I just try to be reasonable in my assessment of where I am anchored. I move between Poortjie and Melkbaai and sometimes I go further down towards gordons bay. I mostly fish with pilchard, chocca and the odd bit of mixed fish bait. I also take out red bait or prawn or worm etc etc if I want to target other edible species.
I work from home and am semi-retired so I fish often during the week when most other poor sod's are working. I like fishing on the incoming tide. You mentioned color, very important. The rest is trial and error. Send me your cell no and I will send a pic of my last 3 good fish. My cell is 0827204291. Regards Rob

Strand cob

Any news?
Rob...just a few questions (no pressure to give up any fishing secrets you don't want to). My buddy and I always fish at night (fish just seem way more active) and this restricts us to Poortjie (Blakes) as we don't feel safe on our kayaks at night on other spots (except Hangklip). We generally fish with handlines...variety of baits but mostly pilchard...often we try to hit the incoming and high tide...and of course, if we feel the water is cold we don't even bother going out. Also aim for discoloured water and SE wind.
Based on the above...any tips you can give? Should we rather be fishing during the day so that we can target the reefs off Melkbaai? Do the tides and time of day really matter much in your experience? I must say I'm getting a bit disheartened after many trips only catching undersize cob (always returned to the water). We got a few nice geelbek at Hangklip, and we are getting the small cob...so I don't think our technique is totally off course, but somehow we're just not getting any size cob at all this season.
Any help would be appreciated... you could also PM me.

Hi Alex, I have fished strand a lot in the last 2 months. I have takes a Geelbek of 2.1 kg and several Kob the best so far 4.6, 3.1 and 3.2 kg. I have taken several of 1 to 1.8 kg and released a lot of undersize. Remember to return small fish. Robl

Strand not looking great this summer, or is it just me?
