great we must make a plan sometime. i still want to try and launch from the beach and target steenbras and cob just behind the break. Zandvlei? have seen leeries jump there, but so many people fish from the side there and dont know how long leeries will be around. have caught small elf on light tackle from the side, great fun. this fish is also targeted by residents, dont quite know why? as they cant be good to eat in that water. i return all fish caught there. i stopped a guy with a throw net the other day netting haarder. told him it was illegal. he then said that he had done it for years. i have also seen guys pumping for prawn, just never see any of the officials stopping the illegal actions. well from what i hear these clinics are expensive. i am class A1-1 qualified skipper and have years of sea experience. club? well that is not an issue right now. i would like to be skfa registered but there is a line as to how far i am prepared to go.

@ jpfish. No apology necessary, no offense was taken.

Interesting to know you're in Muizenberg, that is my neck of the woods as well. We must team up at some point and go target those illusive Leeries in Zandvlei one day. The one advantage that we have is that we're so close to Buffel's and the Point compared to the other guys who have to travel to yonder and back, but if the cobbies run in Strand, yes we have to travel. That comes with the territory though.

The clinics are done by Sean Wethmar of Kayak Fish in Strand, so it doesn't form part of the club's activities as such. As far as I know he coordinates dates for clinics, it's probably best to contact him directly for pricing on clinics.

Hope to see you on the water soon!

jislaaik ek klink amper soos n ou vrou me n nat broek. scratch yes the cost are not that big spread over time. have fishing gear rods and stuff like that. respect the water and am very aware of the dangers. am also an ex member of sea rescue. just that the clubs are far from here. muizenberg that is. you still haven't given a price for the SKiLLs test. my actual question with all the silly banter. i would love to join even if the only benefit is to fish maybe one comp a year. well thanks for the info and chat. regards. jpfish lol! sailor

I have to agree with you, there are certainly some costs associated to the sport, but one also have to take into account that kayak fishing is regarded an extreme sport. One always have to consider respect for mother nature and that sometimes she looses her temper without any warnings, it is at times likes these that one don't want to be stranded offshore without your safety equipment to survive or call for help.

Just think, if these two guys in the article below wasn't spotted by someone on land, they could have died from hypothermia, but if you've got your space blanket and a some method of calling for help (like a cell phone in a waterproof poach or a hand held radio) your chances of survival is so much better. This is the exact reason why Strand Kayak Fishing Club prescribes to SAKFA's (who in turn is recognised by SAMSA) safety requirements.

Although we encourage participation in competitions, it's not compulsory so one may choose which (or how many) competitions you participate in, controlling your own costs associated with the sport.

Just as a case in point, Rock and Surf fishing is actually very expensive. If you take into account what the prices for gear has done recently. It's not strange to see pricing of R 2500 and more for a good fishing rod and up to R 1500 (or even more) for a good reel (and we all know us fisherman don't only buy one of each). The cost for bait has also skyrocketed; now add your terminal tackle and the rest and see where one ends up.

Now compare this to kayak fishing, you will need one good jigging/spinning rod with a coffee grinder (using much less line) and (maybe, but not compulsory) one boat rod and multiplier reel for hunting bigger fish. You use much less bait because you paddle into the fishing grounds and your rate of success is increased, thereby reducing re-baiting so often. The kayak and safety equipment (except for flares which remains valid for two years) is a once off outlay and with membership fees at R 250 per year plus say two competitions per year at R300 per comp, you're looking at spending about R70 per month on your passion. Then one knows you're safe, skilled and responsible. R70 is not a high price to pay for ones own safety.

Dont fool yourself, stupidity kills! Get experience, ask for help or do a clinic!!! be SAKFA certified!!!! Empty RE: accreditation

Post by whitewash Mon Nov 14, 2011 9:47 am

@ jpfish. Good question. Fishing experience is obviously something that we place in high regard when entering into these kind of comps. (We want to kick butt you see Great )

When it come to kayaking experience, we'd like to help everyone determine their own level of experience by attending a clinic. Once the clinic has been completed successfully, you'll get a SAKFA number.

Membership to SKFC is R 250.00 per annum (for 2011) and this includes your SAKFA membership fee. Entrance fees to comps is obviously over and above that
