Units are normally well waterproofed. You can leave the power cable connected to the actual unit Johnny that's 100%fine, can also fill the connector points with vaseline to help keep watertight if worried how well they are sealing. Just make sure the FF unit is switched off when surf launching or playing in the surf.
To give you an idea i surf with ski with FF (1-2.5m waves) and have taken a tumble a few times already without damage to the unit.
Insure your unit too for hassle free enjoyment.

Thanks for your assistance and sharing your knowledge.
I have Cuda ff but mounted and get secured with Velcro on the fish hatch. My wire comes through a hole in the hatch and those wires is the once I am concerned about, when launching as they are expose to the elements when launching if the ff is not connected. The hole can be sealed again with a plug like the drain hole on our skis. My battery is stored in a container which seals pretty good under my seat so, I am ok with that, and it’s only the ff connector that is my concern.
I am a little hesitant to launch with the ff in its position on the deck and then get tumbled over by surf. How waterproof/ water resistant /splash proof are these units, any idea?
Again fellow kayakers much appreciated with your assistance.

Hey Johnny
You should leave it off until out the surf zone, normally. Depending on what unit you have most are 100% waterproof (even for the occasional tumble in the surf - within reason of course). You cables to the actual unit etc should also be okay to get wet as they have copper points usually, just make sure you rinse off afterwards if did get wet as they will clog up if left. The best is to leave your FF connected whenever possible (To avoid waring/damaging the pins/terminals by constant in/out!). Battery connector wire/clips and battery should be kept in a tuppaware (or likes) in the dry well behind your seat normally (Stealth) run the cables inside the Kjak and make a small hole into the dryhatch to run the cable through. Then connect the terminal clips to the battery and place into a tuppaware container. YOu need t keep this end of the exposed wiring dry as the wire in the cable will most definitely perish from salt, resulting in the unit letting you down when u need it most. you get self adhesive Zip-tie electrical cable holders from the electrical shop which work incredibly well to secure the cabling on the inside wall of your Kayak, get a couple of these below they are "the Shit" WHOOP! WHOOP!

Marine electronics and surf launching.
Hi Guys
I want to find out, how do you do a surf launch with your fish finders and other marine electronics on?
Do you keep it on the whole time, or do you put it on and plug it in only after the wave section, ps? It’s only when launching into the water. If you keep it in the hatch, what do you do to secure that your connectors doesn’t get wet when surf launching?
I presume most of you take it off when heading back.
Any info regarding this will be appreciated
Regards
Johnny
